Our Story
Published on January 24, 2020
Detroit Manufacturing Systems (DMS) began in a warehouse in an under-served community in the northwest side of Detroit, Michigan. A joint venture between Rush Group Limited, LLC and Faurecia, DMS was created to manufacture and assemble world-class injection-molded components for global brands in 2012.

DMS is notable for being the first new large-scale manufacturing facility to open its doors within the city in decades. Beginning with just twenty-five team members, Andra Rush grew the company to include several hundred more within just a few short years. To accommodate our growth, DMS opened a second facility in Toledo, Ohio, in October 2017. Today, between our Detroit headquarters and our Toledo plant, we are proud to employ over 1,200 team members and manufacture an estimated one-million parts per year.

In August 2018, after leading the company to $1 Billion in annual revenue, Andra Rush sold her majority share to our current Chairman and CEO, Bruce Smith. Bruce has picked up where Andra had left off and is continuing our legacy of responsible growth and manufacturing excellence. Under Bruce’s leadership, our vision is clear: we exist to relentlessly prove that passion and purpose are the forces that create great people, teams and companies that will transform the world. We do this through our G.I.F.T.E.D. and R.I.C.H. principles:

  • (G)ratitude
  • (I)ntegrity
  • (F)un
  • (T)eamwork
  • (E)xcellence
  • (D)iversity
  • (R)espect
  • (I)nnovation
  • (C)ommitment
  • (H)umility

This means that at DMS, we are G.I.F.T.E.D. people with a R.I.C.H. culture who treat people the way they want to be treated. This ultimately lends to a fun and safe work environment where team members are encouraged to live their best lives and empowered to do their best work. Ours is a culture which loves people and uses money, and not the other way around.

We care about our team members, and offer competitive wages and great benefits. We also give them recognition when they achieve excellent results. Each month we reward the highest performing production team in the company, and we reward our exemplary team members with an annual employee All-Star and MVP award ceremony and celebration.
Since 2012, more than 200 team members have received a promotion, and to ensure that our company has the type of leadership that our team members deserve, DMS has recently launched a “Leadership Academy”. The purpose of our academy is to grow our high potential and emerging leaders’ capabilities.

At DMS we have a growth mindset and embrace continuous improvement. We simply love new ideas, and any team member who submits one is eligible to receive a prize each month, and additional prizes are bestowed upon the individuals who submit one of the month’s top three ideas. This ensures that our team members are heard, and that they are empowered to do their best work.

To further pursue manufacturing excellence, we are making an investment into new technologies and automated equipment with the ultimate goal of becoming a “Smart Factory” through Industry 4.0. Becoming a “Smart Factory” will allow us to streamline our production processes, increase output, and reduce waste. This will help make our workplace even safer and more efficient, while helping us achieve an even higher percentage of defect-free product manufacturing.

Indeed, our DMS team members and customers are very important to us, but so are our communities. In 2019, DMS made donations to charitable organizations including the Joe Kocur foundation, the Black United Fund of Michigan, and Pathway in Toledo, OH, among others.

Around the 2019 year-end holidays, we donated gloves and socks to the Neighborhood Service Organization and toys to the children at the John Evans Montessori Academy in Detroit. The spirit of servanthood and giving goes beyond our boardroom and is embraced by our team members as well. In August 2019, members of our team volunteered to help Life Remodeled remove blight from an inner-city Detroit neighborhood. During the holidays our team donated clothing, food, and toys to those in need. In October, our team members purchased pink bracelets to raise money to add to our company’s donation to the Susan G. Komen foundation to help fight breast cancer.

We are a world-class Tier-1 automotive supplier who loves people and uses money. We strive for excellence through a continuous improvement mindset while embracing servanthood leadership and empowering our team members to do their best work. We care about our people, our customers and our communities.

We are Detroit Manufacturing Systems.
