Saying So Long to Summer: A Look Back

Do you feel it? The seasons are changing. Autumn has arrived (or Fall, if you prefer.. after all, the leaves do fall down ;). Whether we like it or not, summer has drawn to a close, and the cold air is a’coming!

Before we turn on the furnace and fire-up the snow blowers though, let’s take a look back at some of the many fun and amazing times that we shared together at DMS and in our larger communities this summer!

Back in May…

We kicked off summer by hosting a Memorial Day luncheon in honor and remembrance of those who served in our military as well as first responders and their families for their incredible service and sacrifice. All employees were invited to share a meal, and we were served chicken wings, ribs, green beans, macaroni & cheese and corn bread by our awesome Human Resources team.

In June…

Our DMS family at the Toledo plant hosted a Manufacturing And Design Experience (MADE) Summer Youth Manufacturing program. This allowed local students to learn more about career opportunities in American manufacturing that exist in their own backyard, and the team in Toledo did a great job showcasing our #dmslife in Toledo.

Also in June, we celebrated fifty-four outstanding team members. These individuals made significant contributions to DMS last year by performing exceptionally well and exemplifying our core principles. Each All-Star was awarded a North Face jacket and a personalized crystal trophy. In addition, their name was listed on an MVP plaque that is located in our main lobby.

During the All Star celebration lunch, DMS selected Lochan Shrestha as its 2018 Most Valuable Person (“MVP”) for 2018!

Throughout the year Lochan demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our core principles throughout his daily interactions with the entire DMS team.

Lochan, one of our Systems Analysts, is well-known for his perpetual smile and eagerness to serve all who call upon him for assistance. To honor him, DMS provided Lochan and his immediate family round trip tickets to Nepal to see his siblings and extended family. Everyone at the luncheon applauded with excitement over the news that he and his family would soon be reunited for an extended period.

At DMS, we go the “extra mile” to recognize people like Lochan, who makes everyone around him better while contributing to making our company a great place to work.

In July…

We came together for our CEO/Chairman, Bruce Smith’s first ‘All DMS Team Town Hall Meeting’!

Bruce kicked off the meeting with a Soul-Train icebreaker, generating a burst of energy throughout the entire room!

The informative sessions covered topics including: the path to greatness, DMS’ purpose and principles, what makes desired leaders, winning strategies, recognition events, up-and-coming initiatives and having FUN at work!

Bruce delivered a heartfelt and profound message to all members in attendance. His closing thoughts encapsulated the idea that collectively, we all win when we work together as a team to help each other.

Also in July, we celebrated our Detroit plant’s successful completion of its’ IATF 16949:2016 surveillance audit, and our Toledo plant’s first IATF 16949:2016 certification audit!

Uncompromised quality is an expectation of our customers; a successful IATF audit is a important step in building a world class quality system. Very special thanks to all the key players involved in making this happen!

It's true that we worked hard, but we also had a lot of fun in July with creative team-building events organized by our amazing employees including an ongoing ‘Monday Morning Hustle’, as well as a ‘hippity hoppity race’ and a ‘three-legged race’!

In August…

We learned how to slow down and breathe a bit with weekly meditation sessions. Meditation can improve your overall health and mind including a decrease in pain, increased brain growth, improved wisdom, improved productivity, improved social life, and more. Hourly employees are invited to attend a daily “10-Minute Wellness Break” during their 3rd break and our salaried team members are invited to attend a 30-minute meditation session every Wednesday at 10:00 am.

A group of volunteers from DMS also participated in a community clean-up event hosted by 'Life Remodeled' with the goal of removing blight from the city. Thank you to all who volunteered to help revitalize our community & great work!

In September…

Our company was proud to award six $10,000 scholarships to sons and daughters of our employees. We are grateful that we can help these well-deserving students in their pursuit of higher education.

We were also grateful that we could be a "triple-hit" level sponsor for the Joe Kocur Foundation's celebrity softball game and golf outing.

The Joe Kocur foundation has raised more than $1.1 million dollars in charitable contributions for children’s organizations, non-profits, and local families in need over the last 11 years through its celebrity softball game and a golf outing.

In September we also had our second 'All Family Meeting' hosted by COO Ben Meachem where we learned about several exciting new developments taking place across the company. We also learned about health and wellness information, and congratulated the production team of the month.

Summer also came to an official end in September, but as the first brightly colored leaves began to free themselves from the tree branches and fall gingerly to the ground, they weren’t the only things falling from the sky at DMS- so were the bean bags in our first official tournament!

The event helped to break down some of the walls throughout the organization and brought team members from different buildings and departments together in the spirit of friendly competition and FUN (A DMS core value).

When all the dust settled, there were just three teams left holding the trophies:

Drake Mowers & Mike Ondayko (Detroit A Crew Champions)

Josh Mems & Reginald Timmons (Detroit B & C Crew Champions)

Iesha Lawrence & Earnesto Reed (Toledo Champions)

Congratulations to the winners, and a big thank you to all who participated. We are looking forward to next year’s competition!

What an amazing summer!

Thank you to all of our teammates for all of your hard work, and for the great memories!
